|Euthanasia is growing in popularity world wide, now being legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, and Luxembourg. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Canada, and in the US states of Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Montana, and California.
In South Africa we narrowly avoided the leglisation of Euthanasia in 2016 when the decision of a High Court Judge to allow the euthanasia of Mr Robert Stransham-Ford was overturned in the Supreme Court. But the issue will undoubtedly surface again.
As Christians we need to be prepared to deal with this issue and apply our minds to be able to respond.
Dr Allan Donkin is a General Practitioner currently practicing in Somerset West. In 2012-2014 he worked as a General Practitioner in Canada and witnessed the cultural acceptance and growth in popularity of euthanasia before its legalisation in 2016. He wrote 2 letters that were published in the British Columbia Medical Journal on the topic during his time in Canada. He also submitted an affidavit to the High Court in 2015 as part of the Stransham-Ford case.
